Faith spent the rest of the day lost in her own world. She tried to go back to her book, but her thoughts continually returned to Matthew. How had her feelings for him developed so quickly to the extent that she’d been willing to cheat on Vance, who she’d always considered to be the love of her life? ‘What have I got myself into?’ she sighed to Blossom when the cat clambered onto her knee, purring. ‘I have no bloody idea what I’m going to do.’

She couldn’t confess to Vance because he would try to kill Matthew. It wouldn’t matter that he was a police officer working on behalf of the Maguires. In fact, his reaction if he did find out didn’t bear thinking about. But then again, everyone’s reaction if they found out about her relationship with Vance would be equally awful.

Silent tears rolled down her face as she felt herself torn in half by the love she had for these two men who were total opposites. Despite the work Matthew did for the Maguires, he was a good, honest man and his love for her was pure. Vance’s had always been a little possessive, right from when they were young. He’d always said she was his and no one else’s. Matthew would never think of her like that, but he lacked Vance’s dark intensity, which she so loved.

Misery engulfed her, as well as confusion. She was beginning to wish she had liked Dragomir in a romantic way. At least she could have been with him without unleashing holy hell.
